American Heart Association applauds proposed plan to reform SGR as a positive step for patients

Washington, D.C. American Heart Association Executive Vice President for Advocacy and Health Quality Mark Schoeberl, issued the following statement today on a legislative proposal to reform the Medicare physician payment formula, released jointly by the Senate Finance Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee:

“Congratulations to the members of the Senate Finance and House Ways and Means Committees for coming together on this bipartisan proposal to address longstanding issues with the physician payment formula.

If, as hoped, this latest legislative effort produces a permanent fix to the SGR that promotes the delivery of high quality health care, patients will be the real winners.

For over a decade, the American Heart Association has dedicated significant effort and resources to quality improvement on behalf of the nation’s heart and stroke patients. The prospect of the broader inclusion of these initiatives within the Medicare program is gratifying and a positive step toward providing all Americans with the quality health care they so deserve.

Following a more thorough review, we will provide more extensive comments on this proposal and look forward to working with committees as this draft plan moves through the legislative process.”
