Washington, D.C., June 13, 2013 The American Heart Association has issued the following comments from Dr. Gordon Tomaselli in response to today’s Supreme Court ruling about gene patents:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision on gene patents is a win for Americans with heart disease and stroke,” said Dr. Gordon Tomaselli, chief of cardiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and past president of the American Heart Association. “The American Heart Association is hopeful that this decision will help unleash innovative research in cardiovascular genetics and result in its safe and efficient translation to patient care. We urge the Obama Administration to release anticipated guidance on laboratory developed tests as more tests will likely come on the market as a result of this ruling. This will help ensure that genetic tests are effective and reliable.”
