DENVER, September 24, 2014 – The American Heart Association  is proud to announce that SM Energy is the first company in history to raise more than $1 million in a single market for the organization’s premiere annual fundraising event –the Heart Walk. The Heart Walk, which raises funds to save lives from this country's No. 1 and No. 4 killers - heart disease and stroke – is designed to promote physical activity and heart-healthy living.  The Denver Heart Walk is just one of nearly 340 events that take place across the country each year. The results ranking SM Energy as the organization’s top Heart Walk fundraising company for the 2013-2014 fiscal year were recently released by the Dallas-based nonprofit.

“I am so proud of our employees who showed leadership, passion and the ability to rise up to the fundraising challenge and exceed expectations,” said Tony Best, CEO of SM Energy and 2014 Denver Heart Walk chair.  “It’s been an honor to serve as this year’s chairman, as my family has been personally affected by heart disease and stroke.  The money raised for the Denver Heart Walk will be used to take significant steps toward eliminating heart disease and stroke.”

In addition to the $1 million contributed by SM Energy employees, the company donated an additional $65,000 as part of their corporate sponsorship.  Their contributions helped the June 7,2014 Denver Heart Walk raise a record total of $3.8 million to help build healthier lives free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, significantly exceeding the 2014 Walk goal of $3,000,000.

SM Energy’s commitment to its community is powerfully evident in its efforts to improve heart health.  Along with key support from additional area oil and gas corporate sponsors and service providers, SM Energy’s record-breaking contributions to the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk and their dedication to employee wellness are great examples of how corporations can help drive positive health outcomes. It’s going to take corporations like SM Energy and others in the industry to help create a culture of health and well-being in the workplace by collaborating on best practices and measurable new strategies for employee engagement.

“We are so grateful to all of the men and women at SM Energy who have given back to the community by participating in our annual Heart Walk,” said Rob Blaustein, Regional VP of Development for AHA in Colorado.  “The funds they raised will support groundbreaking research and provide lifesaving information to those who need it most.”

The 2015 Denver Heart Walk will be June 6 . For more information on how to participate in the annual celebration of heart health visit
