- It was interesting to see that this disparity was present regardless of socioeconomic status and regardless of age, for the most part. So, some of the factors that we would think might make someone higher risk for stroke, even if you adjust for that, there was a strong association for Black women having higher risk of stroke. If I had to guess, I would say that, first of all, Black women do have more hypertension during pregnancy, and the reasons for that are complicated, but I also wonder if they are being treated as aggressively for their high blood pressure during pregnancy. There are complicated reasons why they might be, but it is well-known that there's quite a bit of bias in the healthcare system. And it may be also that when women are presenting, particularly postpartum, with symptoms such as severe headache and high blood pressure, that the response to the woman from the provider may differ depending on her race, unfortunately. So this is an area that I think really needs to be addressed.
