SEATTLE, February 20, 2024 — The American Heart Association today issued the following statement from Ruchi Kapoor, MD, PhD, member of the Puget Sound Board of Directors, in response to the proposed budget funding for the Washington Tobacco and Vapor Product Prevention & Cessation Program:

“The American Heart Association appreciates the House of Representatives’ inclusion of an additional $500,000 for the Washington Tobacco and Vapor Product Prevention and Cessation Program in the supplemental budget for FY 2025, but more funding is needed to support a proven strategy that reduces tobacco use rates and save lives. There is still time to include funding in the Senate budget and we encourage members to at least match the House's funding of $500,000 in the final budget to reduce tobacco related illnesses and deaths. Washington spends $3.26 billion annually on health care caused by these dangerous products and when well-funded, the Washington Tobacco Prevention and Control Program saved $5 in health care costs for every $1 invested. We must reach further to protect Washingtonians and our kids, as we lose 8,300 residents each year to devastating tobacco-related illnesses, including heart disease.”
