GREENVILLE, SC, October 27, 2022 — Thousands of individuals in the Upstate are currently employed in the construction sector [1] and people in the construction industry have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease compared to other industries [2].

That is why the American Heart Association, a global force for healthier lives for all, launched Hard Hats with Heart. The industry specific campaign brings together industry leaders and employees across the Upstate to integrate heart health, well-being and prevention solutions into the culture of the industry.

Annually, the Association conducts a Hard Hats with Heart event. This year’s event chair, Ben Barfield, vice president and division manager of Brasfield & Gorrie in Greenville, South Carolina, led the campaign efforts across the Upstate.

The Hard Hats with Heart event is anchored in a series of customizable workplace activities that inspire employees to be more engaged with their health, reconnect with colleagues and be physically active while supporting a great cause and having fun doing it.

“In construction it seems like nothing can ever wait, but our health and lives cannot wait either. It starts from the top down. Our owners and leaders must care to make a change in our industry, and together we can hopefully improve the culture of the construction industry,” said Jason Woodward, vice president of corporate development at Metromont Corporation.

Hard Hats with Heart in the Upstate area is sponsored by Brasfield & Gorrie, McMillan Pazdan Smith, Metromont Corporation, Modular Millwork, Morgan Corporation, Rescom Construction, Spectrum Interiors and Strange Brothers Grading Co.

The funds raised from Hard Hats with Heart go towards research, advocacy, CPR training and to promote better health in support of the Association’s 2024 Health Equity Impact Goal, reducing barriers to health care access and quality.
