AUSTIN, Oct. 18, 2024 – Meredith Wells, RN and vice president of neurosciences and trauma service lines for Ascension Texas, will serve as the executive volunteer chairperson of the 2024-2025 Austin Go Red for Women® movement, a comprehensive platform designed more than two decades ago to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally.
As chairperson, Wells will play a critical role by leading Austin women in learning how to live longer by reducing their risk for heart disease and stroke. This year’s Go Red for Women Summit and Luncheon will take place from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Feb. 19, 2025, at the JW Marriott Austin.
“Women in particular need to be fiercely protective of their right to equal and appropriate healthcare,” said Wells. “Far too often, symptoms in women are dismissed or misunderstood, especially in matters of the heart and stroke, where symptoms can present differently than they do in men. Knowing your body and speaking up when something feels off is not only empowering but can also save lives.”
“At Ascension Texas, we are proud to support Meredith in her role as chair of Go Red for Women,” said Andy Davis, president and CEO of Ascension Texas. “Our sponsorship of this important initiative aligns with our mission to promote heart health and brain health, while providing compassionate, personalized care to all. Leaders like Meredith help drive the meaningful change we strive for in the communities we serve.”
According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women, claiming more lives than all cancers combined. Nearly 45% of women over age 20 are living with some form of CVD. Heart disease and stroke continue to be Austin women’s greatest health threat.
“I am excited to connect with women from diverse backgrounds and experiences, coming together in a unified effort to raise awareness and support for education, research, and programs,” said Wells. “Their commitment is more than just a contribution: it is a powerful investment in the health and well-being of our Austin communities. You never know – the person you help educate today could be the one who will respond to your healthcare emergency or that of a loved one.”
Go Red for Women is nationally sponsored by CVS Health and the Austin Go Red for Women Summit and Luncheon is locally sponsored by Ascension Texas, Texas Mutual, Centre for Neuro Skills and Encompass Health.
