ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Feb. 7, 2024 – Brenda Begley, market manager/vice president of sales-Albuquerque for Clear Channel Outdoor, and Martha Carpenter, director at NAI SunVista Commercial Real Estate are the volunteer co-chairpersons of the 2023-2024 New Mexico Go Red for Women® movement, a comprehensive platform designed more than two decades ago to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally.
As the American Heart Association celebrates its 100th birthday, Begley and Carpenter play a critical role by leading New Mexico’s efforts to improve maternal health and women’s mental well-being across the state.
Go Red for Women is a global movement with impact across the United States and in more than 50 countries around the world. This year’s Go Red for Women movement and its local achievements will be celebrated at the New Mexico Go Red for Women Luncheon, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Feb. 21 at Hotel Albuquerque. The luncheon is expected to draw about 700 women and raise $300,000.
According to the American Heart Association, a global force for healthier lives for all, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women, claiming more lives than all cancers combined. Nearly 45% of women over age 20 are living with some form of CVD[1]. Heart disease and stroke continue to be New Mexico women’s greatest health threat.
Begley, who was also co-chairperson of last year’s campaign, said the American Heart Association remains “close to her heart,” no pun intended.
“Too many family members and friends have suffered heart health issues,” Begley said. Both her father and father-in-law struggled with heart disease; both had quadruple bypasses and did not change their habits.
“I have also seen the effects it has on loved ones of those afflicted,” she added. “I believe most people think about heart health only when a problem arises, and sadly many times it is too late. Preventive measures are so very important and I hope to continue to share what I learn with others.”
Begley has had her heart issues due to stress but has used what she has learned through the American Heart Association to make positive changes in her health. Her company has supported Go Red for Women and the Heart Walk with funds and participation.
Carpenter has volunteered for the luncheon and donated to its Purse-onalities auction for the last seven years. She took a leadership role this year because both her parents died of a heart attack, even though her father had undergone quadruple bypass and her mother had a pacemaker.
“Because of today’s technology I believe my father and mother lived a good longer life – longer than they would have had this technology not been available,” Carpenter said. Her husband was recently diagnosed with Afib, or atrial fibrillation, which is a type of arrhythmia, or abnormal heartbeat.
As a Hispanic woman, she’s striving to bring more heart health awareness to the state’s large Hispanic community.
“I would like to help educate more of the Hispanic/Latino population on heart disease and living a healthier lifestyle,” Carpenter added.

About Go Red for Women®
The American Heart Association’s signature initiative, Go Red for Women®, is a comprehensive platform designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally. While the majority of cardiac events can be prevented, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, claiming the lives of 1 in 3 women. For more than two decades, Go Red for Women has encouraged awareness. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power of women to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. It challenges them to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. It also gives them tools they need to lead a heart healthy life. The Go Red for Women movement is nationally sponsored by CVS Health, with additional support from national cause supporters.
