Executive Director for American Heart Association San Antonio announced
SAN ANTONIO – After an extensive search, the American Heart Association’s San Antonio market is excited to announce Theresa Spiess as its new executive director.
“As the daughter of a heart attack survivor, I am thrilled to join the American Heart Association and its mission of being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives in San Antonio,” stated Spiess. “I look forward to working with our community and corporate partners in the fight against heart disease and stroke.”
With a proven track record in nonprofit service and collaboration with philanthropists and local business partners, Spiess brings more than 20 years of experience to the Association.
“Theresa’s expertise and leadership style is a natural fit for our team in San Antonio,” stated Sara Harwood, senior vice president of development. “Her ability in developing business relationships and fostering talent has enabled her to lead successful teams in previous roles in the Greater San Antonio area. It is with that in mind, that we look forward to her enhancing our visibility and building new partnerships to aid in our life-saving mission.”
As a witness to incredible generosity from countless families and corporations in our region, Spiess’ experiences have led her to seize opportunities to make the greatest positive impact and focus on high-level fundraising to benefit South Central Texans.
When launched in 2019, she served as the first local executive director for the Central Texas Chapter of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation. In her most recent role, as director of corporate & foundations at Texas Lutheran University, she led the team that garnered the largest competitive grant in the university's history, a $2.89 million Title V grant to create the BUENOS Center for Excellence.
Spiess is a native of Corpus Christi, Texas and graduated from Texas Lutheran University with a Bachelor of Arts in business economics – with minors in public relations and international relations.
