CHARLESTON, S.C. – Feb. 2, 2023 —The American Heart Association, a global force for longer, healthier lives for all, is proud to announce Matt Brewer, Monique Hill, Ashley Cooper, and Tim Kennedy as the chairs of American Heart Association’s slate of 2023 Lowcountry events.

Matt Brewer, chief executive officer, and president for Choate Construction serves as the 2023 Lowcountry Heart Walk Chair, February 25, 2023, at Brittlebank Park. In his role at Choate Construction, Brewer is responsible for the development of the company’s long-term vision, strategy and direction.

“It’s a known fact that here in the south we don’t always make the healthiest decisions,” says Brewer, chair of the 2023 Lowcountry Heart Walk. “That is why organizations like the American Heart Association, and events like the Lowcountry Heart Walk are so important. What an incredible opportunity for our community to come together to gain the knowledge and resources needed to create longer, healthier lives. Through the support of the Charleston community and our dedicated group of volunteers, we are working towards raising over $1,000,000 for the fourth year in a row. These funds will support heart health education and research here in the Lowcountry.”

Ashley Cooper, shareholder at Baker Donelson, will serve as the 2023 Charleston Heart Ball chair. In his role as chair, Cooper will work with local leaders to support the Charleston Heart Ball and expand the mission of the Association. This black-tie event will bring together guests from the corporate, philanthropic and healthcare industries to celebrate the accomplishments made throughout the year, while raising funds to help further the Association’s mission. The Charleston Heart Ball will take place on March 31, 2023, at the Sweetgrass Inn at Wild Dunes, where guests will enjoy an evening of dining, dancing, live entertainment and incredible live and silent auctions.

“I am very honored to chair this thriving event that contributes valuable and needed funds and work alongside the American Heart Association by spreading their mission in the Charleston community,” says Cooper, 2023 Heart Ball chair. “Raising research and community funds, while also promoting awareness around the signs and symptoms of the no. 1 killer of South Carolinians, is very important to me because heart disease impacts so many of us.”

Monique Hill will serve as the 2023 Go Red for Women chair. The Go Red for Women Luncheon will be held on May 25, 2023, at the Charleston Marriott. Hill is the Founder and Primary Consultant for Health Equity and Literacy Partnership Solutions (HELPS) consulting agency.  In her role at HELPS, Hill partners with health organizations to develop collective partnerships with community organizations, provide technical assistance to community organizations seeking to scale health programming, and partners with government, corporate, and academic health organizations to develop and execute public health conferences and seminars.

“Heart disease is the number one killer of women, and most of us know someone who has been affected by it,” says Hill, 2023 Go Red for Women Chair. “The Go Red for Women campaign inspires all women to learn the signs and symptoms of heart disease and to take charge of their own health. I am thankful to work alongside the American Heart Association on this incredible movement of improving the lives and health of women in our community.”

The 2023 Chair of the Hard Hats with Heart event is Tim Kennedy, president of Trident Construction. Kennedy has over 30 years of experience in the construction industry and directs the strategic growth and day-to-day activities of the company. Kennedy is actively engaged in the preconstruction efforts on major projects and regularly monitors the success and commitment of Trident Construction’s clients.

“Heart disease is the number one killer of construction workers,” says Kennedy, 2023 Hard Hats with Heart Chair. “We are excited to support the American Heart Association because they are helping make a change in our industry. We are making a healthier lifestyle part of our culture at Trident Construction with the help and resources that the American Heart Association has to offer. Our goal is to have every company in our industry make this lifestyle change part of their company culture as well.”
