SEATTLE, March 6, 2024 — The American Heart Association today issued the following statement from Ruchi Kapoor, MD, PhD, member of the Puget Sound Board of Directors, in response to the finalized budget funding for the Washington Tobacco and Vapor Product Prevention and Cessation Program:

“The American Heart Association appreciates the House of Representatives’ and the Senate’s inclusion of an additional $500,000 for the Washington Tobacco and Vapor Product Prevention and Cessation Program for fiscal year 2025, as budget writers recognize the importance of reducing the number of Washingtonians we lose each year to tobacco and nicotine-related illnesses. This brings the total budget to $3 million in fiscal year 2025. While this investment brings Washington closer to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommended amount of funding to adequately support tobacco use prevention, we still sit at only about 4.7%. We lose 8,300 residents each year to devastating tobacco-related illnesses, including heart disease, and funding these programs adequately will save more lives. We’d like to thank Rep. Paul Harris and Sen. Lynda Wilson for sponsoring this budget proviso and for their support of policies that reduce tobacco and nicotine use in Washington.”
