ANCHORAGE, Alaska, June 24, 2024 – The American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization devoted to a world of healthier lives for all, announced Sarah Skeel, chief administrative officer of Providence Alaska Medical Center, as the community volunteer chairperson of the 2024 Alaska Heart Run & Walk. The annual Alaska Heart Run & Walk event, and fundraising campaign leading up to it, is dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke, which remain among the top killers of Alaskans. This year it will take place on Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Alaska Airlines Center.
“As someone who was born and raised here, I’m particularly passionate about advancing health within our local Alaskan communities,” said Skeel. “I’m excited to serve as this year’s Alaska Heart Run & Walk chairperson where I can help support the American Heart Association’s work to foster better heart and brain health outcomes for everyone, everywhere.”
In Anchorage, Skeel will be joined by fellow executives seeking to make an impact in the fight against heart disease and stroke in the community. The executive leadership team includes:
- Cecily Sheats, Providence Alaska Medical Center
- Aaron Plikat, UA Local 367
- Cheryl Myers, Alaska Regional Hospital
- Cory Pace, Alaska Heart & Vascular Institute
- Sarah Ransom, Red Heart Services
“We’re thrilled to have Sarah, a long-time healthcare leader, championing the Alaska Heart Run & Walk this year,” said Kristin George, executive director, American Heart Association, Alaska. “The scientific discoveries the American Heart Association has funded over the last 100 years have been possible because of leaders like Sarah, combined with the support of passionate individuals and organizations. Together, we can all help save lives.”
Local teams have already started to form and commence fundraising. Participants can register for the event at AlaskaHeartRun.org. From there, they can create personal fundraising pages, download the Heart Walk mobile app, and encourage family and friends to join. Funds raised go toward research, advocacy, CPR training and increasing access to quality health care.
The Alaska Heart Run & Walk is locally presented by Alaska Heart & Vascular Institute and supported by Providence Alaska Medical Center.
