Texans unite in Waco to champion accessible, affordable, adequate health care coverage

WACO, Texas, March 24, 2026 — The American Heart Association, a global force for changing the future of health for all, today hosted Heart Spark Waco, an ideas forum designed to inspire grassroots advocates to champion expanded health care access in Texas.

Waco Family Medicine set the stage for the high-energy event, which blended issue education and personal storytelling to equip Texans to speak confidently and elevate the urgency of affordable and accessible health care coverage.

Dozens of students, community leaders and advocates attended, representing several generations of change-makers.

“The experience brings people together at the grassroots level to build skills and confidence in communicating with lawmakers. It encourages folks to share their personal stories and leaves participants empowered to fight for better health care coverage for all Texans, no matter where they live, work or how much they earn,” said Sarah Rivin, Texas government relations lead, American Heart Association.

“Getting involved isn’t about being an expert – it’s about showing up and speaking out,” said Andre Scott, American Heart Association Heart Powered advocate and Baylor student, who spoke at the event. “When we share our stories and stand together, we remind Texans that change doesn’t start at the Capitol — it starts with us right here in Waco.”

Many Texans face significant challenges accessing health insurance, and several attendees spoke of supporting loved ones through long and financially devastating medical journeys.

The American Heart Association advocates for numerous policy priorities through its Heart Powered grassroots movement. In Texas, a top issue is ensuring that health insurance coverage is adequate, affordable and accessible. Improving access enhances and strengthens evidence-based preventive care, reduces disparities in treatment and supports a culturally competent health care workforce equipped to provide high-value care for every Texan, across both rural and urban communities.

“Too many Texans remain uninsured, but together we can spark change,” Scott said.
