PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 17, 2019 — The American Heart Association, a global force for longer, healthier lives, has awarded its Clinical Research Prize to Harlan M. Krumholz, M.D., S.M., FAHA, the Harold H. Hines, Jr., Professor of Medicine and the director of Yale School of Medicine’s Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation, one of the nation’s first and most productive research units dedicated to producing innovations to improve patient outcomes and promote better population health.

Dr. Krumholz was recognized “for his work as a founding leader in the field of outcomes research. His work has led to improvements in the quality of care and outcomes for millions of patients nationwide and beyond,” said American Heart Association President Robert A. Harrington, M.D., FAHA, who presented him with the award.

The award was presented today at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2019 in Philadelphia. The Association’s Scientific Sessions is an annual, premier global exchange of the latest advances in cardiovascular science for researchers and clinicians.

“Harlan has produced scholarship and led initiatives to improve the quality of care and patient outcomes, reduce disparities, enable transparency in practice and research and avoid wasteful practices,” Harrington said. “His team has led national improvement initiatives, architected national and international quality measurement assays and strategies, developed platforms for research and clinical care improvement in China, promoted patient-centric approaches to research and clinical care and created strategies and tools to facilitate open science and advance scientific integrity. His group is now focused on harnessing the digital transformation in healthcare to accelerate knowledge generation and facilitate the delivery of care aligned with the needs and preferences of each individual.”

Dr. Krumholz has a long history of leadership and service with the American Heart Association. He was founding chairperson of the Annual Scientific Forum on Quality of Care and Outcomes Research and founding chair of the Quality of Care and Outcomes Research Interdisciplinary Working Group. In 2008, he became the first editor of the American Heart Association journal, Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes. He was also previously named an American Heart Association Distinguished Scientist.

Dr. Krumholz has been honored by membership in the National Academy of Medicine, the Association of American Physicians and the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He was a member of the Advisory Committee to the Director of the National Institutes of Health and was a founding Governor of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. He is the founder of HugoHealth, a patient-centric platform to engage people as partners in research and facilitate the secure movement of digital health data; co-founder of Refactor Health, an enterprise healthcare AI-augmented data management company; and a founder of medRxiv, a preprint server for the medical and health sciences. He received the Friendship Award from the People’s Republic of China in recognition of his collaborative efforts to develop a national cardiovascular research network.
