DALLAS, June 2, 2020 — The American Heart Association, the leading voluntary health organization devoted to a world of longer, healthier lives, is calling on companies and innovators to submit their food system solutions to the Foodscape Innovation Awards. In its second year, the awards recognize leading-edge innovations to improve the health of our food system.

“The health and sustainability of our food system continues to be tested and strained, with added pressure from the coronavirus pandemic,” said American Heart Association Chief Medical Officer for Prevention Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., M.P.H., FAAFP. “However, there are companies and organizations who are adapting and making positive changes in food access, sustainability and nutrition security. Our goal in recognizing these changes is to show that systems change is not only possible, it’s happening.”

Applications are open now through August 17, 2020 at heart.org/foodinnovationawards. The applications will be reviewed by a panel of judges with expertise in areas such as nutrition, food science, agricultural or environmental sciences, retail, food manufacturing and public health. The judges will select the recipient of the Innovation Excellence Award and narrow down a group of finalists for voting open to the public to determine the recipient of the Consumer Choice Award.

Winning innovations must be original, recent, and relevant, with a demonstrated or strong potential for positive impact on public health.

Companies and organizations operating in the U.S. from all sectors of the food industry are eligible. Consumer voting and the winner notification will take place in the Fall.

The Foodscape Innovation Awards are one facet of the American Heart Association’s broader food systems strategy, which includes acting as a convenor for leaders in the food industry to align on public health strategies, provide consumers with science-backed healthy eating information and more.
