GREENVILLE, S.C., August 21, 2024 – The American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, announces a $10,000 contribution from AT&T. This donation will support the organization’s efforts to provide essential CPR and First Aid training resources in rural Upstate.
Each year, over 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals in the United States, with survival heavily reliant on immediate CPR from someone nearby. Unfortunately, about 90% of individuals who suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) do not survive, largely because CPR is performed less than half of the time1. This gap in response is particularly pronounced in rural areas and among communities where CPR training rates are lower.
“At AT&T, we believe in the power of community and the importance of equipping individuals with lifesaving skills. We are proud to support the Upstate American Heart Association’s efforts to bring vital CPR and First Aid training to rural areas. This contribution is a testament to our commitment to making a meaningful impact and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their location, has the tools they need to save lives,” said Amanda Taylor, AT&T, regional director, external affairs.
With the support of AT&T's contribution, the American Heart Association, Upstate will distribute CPR & First Aid Anywhere Kits and CPR & First Aid in Youth Sports Kits to middle and high schools in rural communities. These kits are designed with sustainability in mind, each capable of training an average of 296 individuals over a three to five-year period. By equipping students with these vital skills, the American Heart Association aims to instill the confidence and knowledge needed to effectively respond to cardiac emergencies, whether at school, home, or in the community.
“Our mission is to ensure that every community, particularly those facing the greatest disparities, has access to lifesaving education and resources,” said Kelly Wilkins, executive director, American Heart Association, Upstate. “This contribution from AT&T will make a profound difference in rural areas, where access to CPR training is often limited. We are incredibly grateful for their support and commitment to improving health equity.”
