SPRINGDALE, Ark., Oct. 28, 2024 – The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health for all, will host the 2024 Vestido Rojo event for local Hispanic women from 7 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Springdale Civic Center. Upward of 800 women are expected to attend the free event.
Vestido Rojo, meaning “red dress,” is a Spanish-speaking event for women to celebrate life and learn the tools to fight against heart disease.
Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, yet only about 15 percent of Hispanic women recognize it as their greatest health threat. About 40 percent of Hispanic women over the age of 20 are living with some form of cardiovascular disease. This includes conditions such as high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, and stroke.
American Heart Association Community Impact Director Eva Olivas emphasized the urgency of addressing women’s heart health and encouraging others to join the effort.
“Cardiovascular diseases can impact women of all ages, including those close to you. Our goal is to motivate, inform and empower Hispanic women throughout the region,” Olivas said.
The local event has always been a colorful celebration of Northwest Arkansas’ vibrant Hispanic community. This year’s event will be no different.
Guests will arrive to music and videos and enjoy a performance by Trio Hermanitas Alvarez.
Mercy Hospital NWA will provide blood pressure, A1C and cholesterol checks; Community Clinic will offer free dental health checks, UAMS will offer free flu vaccines and ARCare will offer HIV testing. Attendees can also peruse educational booths.
After a heart-healthy brunch, personnel from media sponsor La Zeta 95.7-FM will serve as emcees for a program that begins at 11 a.m. At the center of the event are the Madrinas – Hispanic women in the community who are passionate about their health and the health of their community. The Association recruited more than 50 Madrinas, who in turn invited their friends and family to attend with them.
The 2024 NWA Vestido Rojo is presented nationally by CVS Health and supported locally by Life is Why Sponsor The Emerson Group, health screen sponsor Mercy Hospital NWA, signature sponsor Walmart and La Zeta as media sponsor.
