COLUMBIA, S.C.,  Aug. 21, 2024 — In a significant step towards promoting heart health and sustainability, the American Heart Association and the Ritedose Corporation will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for new water-filling stations donated to the Rapid Shelter Columbia. The event will start at 9:30 a.m. (ET) on Monday, August 26, at 194 Calhoun Street. The ribbon cutting will be followed by Hands-Only CPR demonstrations and blood pressure education sessions for residents.

Prior to this donation, shelter residents relied on cases of unrefrigerated bottled water. There was a need for a more sustainable way for residents to stay hydrated. The donation will also include reusable bottles that will be given to residents.

"The City of Columbia Homeless Services, Ritedose and the American Heart Association, Midlands embodies our shared commitment to improving lives. Their donation of water stations is more than just a gift; it’s a lifeline that promotes health and well-being among our residents. Together, we are making a tangible impact, ensuring that every resident at Rapid Shelter Columbia has access to clean, refreshing water—a vital resource for heart health and overall wellness. This collaboration truly reflects: Be the Change," said Johnasten Cooper, Homeless Services project coordinator for the City of Columbia.

According to the American Heart Association, proper hydration is essential for heart health, and keeping the body hydrated helps the heart pump blood easier through the blood vessels to the muscles.

“The American Heart Association is committed to advancing health equity – which only exists when everyone has an opportunity to enjoy healthier lives. Finding a way for these residents to have something we take for granted so often is an initiative we are both proud of and grateful to be a part of,” said Lizzie Tankersley, executive director of the American Heart Association, Midlands.

This donation comes on the heels of Ritedose being recognized by the American Heart Association as the #1 Field Day company in the nation for 2023.
