CLEVELAND, March 18, 2024 – The American Heart Association of Greater Cleveland is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking update to its esteemed Lorraine Dodero STEM Goes Red for Girls Scholarship program. Thanks to the generosity of Dodero and The Sam J. Frankino Foundation, the Association will double the number of $5,000 scholarships awarded for the 2024 cycle, from six to 12.

The Association’s Go Red for Women movement and Dodero, chairman and trustee of The Sam J. Frankino Foundation, developed the Cleveland STEM Goes Red for Girls Scholarship in 2019. The goal of the scholarship was to bridge the gap to help female students pursue careers in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math) and achieve their goals.

The decision to increase the number of scholarships stems from a dedication to creating pathways for success and breaking down barriers in traditionally underrepresented areas of study.

"We are thrilled to announce this monumental update to the STEM Goes Red for Girls Scholarship program," said Greater Cleveland American Heart Association executive director Shelley Webber. " Doubling the number of scholarships during our centennial year is not only a testament to our commitment to empowering future leaders, but also a celebration of our legacy of advocacy for women's health and education. We are so grateful for Lorraine, who made this wonderful opportunity possible."

“I believe diversity and inclusion are essential drivers of innovation and progress," added Dodero, who also served as the Association’s 2024 Go Red for Women co-chair. "Through initiatives like Go Red for Women and the STEM Goes Red for Girls Scholarship, we are working to build a future where all individuals have equal opportunities to succeed and contribute to society."

As part of the application process, students are asked to submit a 500-word essay detailing why they are interested in pursuing a STEM-related degree, how their STEM major will contribute to their future career plans and the importance of STEM in general.

In addition to the essay, STEM Goes Red for Girls Scholarship applicants should submit information related to academic achievements, a high school transcript and an appropriate letter of recommendation. Applicants must also attend one of the schools or districts that participate in the American Heart Association’s annual STEM Goes Red for Girls event.

The deadline for submissions is April 30.

About Go Red for Women®
The American Heart Association’s signature initiative, Go Red for Women®, is a comprehensive platform designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally. While the majority of cardiac events can be prevented, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, claiming the lives of 1 in 3 women. For more than two decades, Go Red for Women has encouraged awareness. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power of women to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. It challenges them to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. It also gives them tools they need to lead a heart healthy life. The Go Red for Women movement is nationally sponsored by CVS Health, with additional support from national cause supporters.
