INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 6, 2024) - The American Heart Association is delivering 1,000 health care kits to four local organizations as part of a $225,000 grant from the Lilly Foundation to reduce cardiovascular (CVD) risk among those living in the 46202 and 46222 ZIP codes.
The program is part of a commitment to improve health and well-being for individuals living in communities who have increased CVD risk due to higher rates of diabetes, obesity, poverty, blood pressure and cholesterol.
During the next 15 months, Eskenazi Health Center, First Samuel Church, Shalom Health Care Center, and Women In Touch Ministries will each receive 250 care kits that include blood pressure cuffs to allow people to self-monitor blood pressure. The kits also contain a pill box to organize medications and health information on a variety of topics in English and Spanish.
The organizations, which collectively serve approximately 100,000 people in the 46202 and 46222 zip codes, will also utilize the American Heart Association’s free “Empowered to Serve” health lessons to educate people about reducing their risk of heart attacks and strokes through healthier eating, increased physical activity, controlling cholesterol and managing diabetes.
“These organizations serve people who often don’t have access to traditional healthcare or who don’t regularly see primary care physicians,” said Dr. William Gill, president of the American Heart Association’s Indianapolis board of directors. “This program builds the capacity of those organizations to be local, trusted sources of information and connectors to services, and it empowers participants to improve their health knowledge, attitudes and behaviors, helping them to live longer, healthier lives.”
The American Heart Association, celebrating its 100th year in 2024, is committed to building a world of longer, healthier lives.
