BALTIMORE, September 13, 2024 — The American Heart Association, Greater Maryland division, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Thomas Chin as President-Elect and Bryan Gately as Leadership Development Chair to its Board of Directors.

Dr. Thomas Chin is a pediatric cardiologist at the University of Maryland Medical System. He serves as a professor and Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital and Co-Director of the Children’s Heart Program.

Dr. Chin has dedicated his career to advancing pediatric cardiology, with a focus on non-invasive imaging, fetal development and cardiomyopathies in children. He is also a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

His extensive community service includes organizing summer camps for children who have undergone heart surgery and organizing free cardiac screenings for teenagers.

Prior to moving to Baltimore in January 2023, he served as the Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, where he also served for 10 years on the Board of Directors in the Capital Region affiliate of American Heart Association, including two years as the president.

“I look forward during the Second Century of the American Heart Association to working with our wonderful team, furthering the mission of the Association, and addressing the social determinants of health in the Baltimore and Greater Maryland Region,” Dr. Chin said.

Chin will serve as president-elect through June 30, 2025, at which point he will assume a two-year term as president of the Greater Maryland Board of Directors.

Bryan Gately brings a wealth of experience in financial management to his new role as Leadership Development Chair. As Executive Director and Banker at J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Baltimore, Bryan has a proven track record of serving high-net-worth individuals with complex financial needs, having worked in the financial services field since 1985.

Gately is committed to leveraging his expertise to support the mission of the American Heart Association and foster leadership within the organization.

With a long history of volunteerism throughout his career in Baltimore, Gately said he gets satisfaction from giving back to the community and recognizes the impact heart disease can have on families, including his own – two of his family members were recently diagnosed with heart disease.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Chin and Mr. Gately to our Board of Directors,” said Dr. Seth Martin, current president of the Greater Maryland division Board of Directors. “Their combined expertise and dedication to our mission will be invaluable as we continue to fight heart disease and stroke and improve the cardiovascular health of our community.”
