FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., Oct. 31, 2024 — The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health for all, has named Kyle Lanham, merchandising director for Walmart, as chairman of the Northwest Arkansas board of directors.
American Heart Association board members bring a combination of skills, experience, passion and influence to accomplish the revenue and health goals of an American Heart Association office. Board members apply their time, talent and resources toward building resource capacity and improving the cardiovascular health of the community. Northwest Arkansas is a top 10 market for the Association in terms of funds raised.
Lanham started at Walmart as a cashier at age 15 and ascended to his current position via leadership roles across Walmart, Sam's Club and Family Dollar. As merchandising director, he leads a $4 billion business in the food division.
“Volunteers like Kyle are the backbone of our community work, and the diversity of expertise among board members brings value to our organization,” said Debbie Alsup, executive director of the American Heart Association-NWA.
Lanham’s grandfather passed away from a heart attack after undergoing a quadruple bypass.
“It was a stark reminder of how important it is to make healthy choices in our lives,” Lanham said. “I strongly believe that had he made better health decisions earlier on, he might still be with us today. His journey and eventual loss has instilled in me a relentless drive to advocate for healthier lifestyles and preventative measures against heart disease.”
His commitment to health and wellness is steeled by his wife Leigh’s battle with leukemia.
“Her diagnosis in 2014 resulted in us spending over a year in a cancer center in North Carolina, struggling to save her,” recalled Lanham. She is now healthy and cancer-free.
“We believe in not just being reactive, but proactive in our health,” he said. “I want to help build awareness and promote the lifestyle changes that can prevent diseases instead of merely treating them. We understand the power of prevention and the significance of making healthy choices, and we want to use our experiences to inspire others to do the same.
Board members serve a three-year term and take on the critical role of helping the association carry out its 2030 Impact Goal to equitably increase healthy life expectancy from 66 years of age to at least 68 years of age across the United States and from 64 years of age to at least 67 years of age worldwide. The board and the Northwest Arkansas staff are also focused on hypertension awareness, eliminating all nicotine use and reducing the risk of heart disease in women, especially expectant and new mothers.
