PORTLAND, Oregon, February 1, 2025 — Cardiovascular disease is the leading killer in the U.S., with at least 6 in 10 U.S. adults (61%) expected to have some type of CVD by 2050, according to recent projections from the American Heart Association. A new, lifesaving public awareness campaign in Oregon and southwest Washington aims to help residents reduce their risk for heart disease and stroke.
The “Cherish Your Heartbeat” campaign encourages area residents to take control of their heart health by learning their key health numbers and working with a health care professional to create a treatment plan. The campaign is sponsored by Vancouver Clinic.
As the Association begins its second century of lifesaving work, the “Cherish Your Heartbeat” campaign will include hypertension awareness messaging that recommends taking steps to ensure a longer healthier life.
“Knowledge is power, particularly when it comes to your health. If you know your risk for heart attack or stroke, you can take steps to reduce your risk,” said Mark Mantei, American Heart Association volunteer board member and Vancouver Clinic chief executive officer. “Start today by working with your health care team to understand your risk of developing cardiovascular disease and create a treatment plan that works for you.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease remains the leading cause of death among American adults. Health care professionals can test for key risk factors like high blood pressure and help patients control or manage their risk for heart disease and stroke. Medication management and regular health screenings are effective tools for addressing CVD risks, alongside establishing and maintaining healthy habits like a balanced diet, regular physical activity and reducing stress.
During the “Cherish Your Heartbeat” campaign, which runs through spring, the Association encourages the Portland and Vancouver community to prioritize heart health by making an appointment with a primary care clinician. Take steps to cherish your heartbeat, every single day.
