Newark, DE, Jan 6. 2024 – The American Heart Association, the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world of healthier lives for all, is proud to announce that Nadira Alston, external affairs manager, Delmarva Power, will serve as chair for the 2024-2025 Delaware STEM Goes Red campaign.

As part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women® movement, the Delaware STEM Goes Red event aims to combat heart disease and stroke by inspiring young women and successful female leaders to drive innovation, technology, health and wellness for women.

“I am honored to chair the Delaware STEM Goes Red event this year,” said Alston. “Building confidence in the next generation of female leaders in STEM is crucial for addressing heart disease and advancing health for all. Together, we can inspire young women to pursue careers in these vital fields.”

With an estimated 3.5 million STEM jobs projected in the U.S. by 2025, and 2 million of those jobs expected to go unfilled, the STEM employment gap poses significant challenges. Despite women and minorities representing 70% of college students, only 3 out of every 100 female students pursuing a bachelor’s degree will work in a STEM field a decade after graduation.

Recognizing the importance of enhancing engagement in STEM disciplines, the American Heart Association is committed to fostering breakthroughs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

“Nadira’s leadership for STEM Goes Red will be transformative,” stated Jim Murphy, executive director, American Heart Association Delaware. “Her commitment to building confidence among young women in STEM will empower them to become the innovators and leaders of tomorrow.”

The annual Delaware STEM Goes Red event will host close to 200 students from across the state, providing them with the chance to connect with top STEM professionals. The 2025 event is scheduled for April 10 at the University of Delaware.

The Go Red for Women initiative is nationally sponsored by CVS Health, while the Delaware campaign is locally supported by organizations including Bayhealth, ChristianaCare and more.
