DETROIT. December 10, 2024 – Thanks to the American Heart Association, a global force for longer, healthier lives and the Detroit Fire Department, Detroit’s Most Holy Trinity Parish is now prepared in the event of a cardiac emergency.

Earlier this year Corktown’s oldest Catholic parish, Most Holy Trinity, contacted the American Heart Association with interest in conducting CPR credentialing and creating a cardiac emergency response plan (CERP) for their Academy’s K-8 school staff in preparation for the 2024-2025 school year.

Each CERP is customized to the organization where it will be implanted and for the needs of the facility. A CERP includes CPR credentialing and the steps that will be taken in the event of a cardiac emergency: starting CPR, calling 911 and getting an AED. Once the plan is completed, an on-site readiness drill is conducted to ensure the organization is familiar with the plan and ready to act in case of an emergency.

Thanks to a grant from the Detroit Fire Department’s HeartSafe Community initiative, an AED was installed in Most Holy Trinity Academy’s gymnasium. To further support Most Holy Trinity’s needs, the American Heart Association provided funding to implement a CERP, credentialed 20 school staff members and purchased two additional AEDs for the academy, ensuring access to a device on every floor, including one for outdoor and off-site activities.

Most Holy Trinity Academy is a private not-for profit catholic school in Detroit’s Corktown where 90% of their student population receives financial assistance, 53% identify as African American, 25% as Hispanic/Latino and 9.8% as multiracial. The academy receives most of its funding from donors and grants.

The American Heart Association’s support for Most Holy Trinity Academy and parish will continue, as they are working with their bible study volunteers to support hands-only CPR demonstrations in Spanish to meet the needs of the Latino community who live, learn and worship in the Corktown neighborhood.
