SACRAMENTO, Calif., August 27, 2026— The American Heart Association today issued the following statement on Senate Bill 977 authored by Senator Dr. Akilah Weber Pierson. The bill, which passed the Legislature with strong bipartisan support, would ensure that large chain restaurants with 20 or more locations nationwide offering children's meals also provide at least one option that meets specified nutrition standards.
“Every parent wants their child to grow up healthy. But parents can choose healthier meals only when those options are available, affordable and accessible. In neighborhoods with limited access to affordable grocery stores and nutritious foods, fast food may be one of the only practical meal options available for families,” said Khuram Arif, M.D., board president of the American Heart Association - Sacramento.
“As a parent and a pediatrician, I know how much families benefit from having healthier options when dining out. SB 977 would provide families with a real choice by ensuring that large chain restaurants with 20 or more locations nationwide offering children’s meals provide at least one meal that meets nutrition standards. That practical step can support busy families and expand access to healthier foods, including in places where nutritious options are harder to find. The American Heart Association urges Governor Newsom to sign SB 977 and help California lead the nation in supporting healthier restaurant meals for children."
