OWATONNA, Minn. – June 5, 2024 – The American Heart Association, a global force for a world of healthier lives for all, recognized Owatonna Hy-Vee General Manager Justin Lewer for saving a life during a life-threatening cardiac arrest emergency at his store.
In a remarkable display of courage and swift action, Lewer saved a life during a critical medical emergency. Back in December of 2023, a customer collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest within the store premises. The situation escalated rapidly, prompting the store to activate a “code blue.” Lewer located an automated external defibrillator (AED) and immediately applied it to the customer. Taking charge of chest compressions until the police and EMS arrived, Lewer’s decisive intervention played a pivotal role in the customer’s survival.
For his heroic actions, Lewer was honored with the American Heart Association’s Heartsaver Hero Award on June 3, 2024. This recognition celebrates individuals who go above and beyond to protect and preserve life during critical moments.
“My goal as the manager is to get customers in and out of our store as safely as possible,” Lewer said. “That wasn’t the case on that day in December. I am so relieved that the customer has made a full recovery and is still with us today.”
Since that day, Lewer has taken it upon himself to train other Hy-Vee employees in emergency response procedures. His dedication ensures that the entire team is prepared to act swiftly and effectively in similar situations.
Cardiac emergencies are common, with over 350,00 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occurring annually in the United States. CPR can double or even triple someone’s chances of survival when performed immediately, yet bystander CPR is only performed 46% of the time. Together, we can turn a nation of bystanders into a nation of lifesavers. For more information on CPR, visit heart.org/CPR.
