HARTFORD, Conn., March 16, 2026 — The American Heart Association today joined lawmakers in urging the General Assembly to include funding for school breakfast for all students in its final budget adjustments, an expenditure strongly supported by Connecticut residents.
“An overwhelming 93% of residents believe that every child should have access to no-cost, healthy meals during the school day,” American Heart Association Government Relations Director Jim Williams said. “We know there is a need, and providing meals is both a practical and an extremely popular solution. We urge lawmakers to support the Governor’s recommendation to fund breakfast and to consider supporting a proposal to fund lunch as well.”
The survey of 501 Connecticut adult residents was conducted early last month. The poll also found that 73% believe it is a very serious problem that some children don’t get the nourishment they need for learning. In addition, the poll found that 80% of residents would support a tax on sugary drinks to pay for school meals.
“Connecticut residents support providing no-cost meals for students and they also strongly support a mechanism to pay for them,” Williams added. “Lawmakers have a rare opportunity to act on an issue that is both urgently needed and overwhelmingly popular.”
Four legislative proposals under consideration this session would help fund or expand school meal access:
- HB 5144, An Act Concerning Funding for School Meals, which has more than 100 legislative sponsors
- SB 6, An Act Concerning Supports for Children and Families
- HB 5214, An Act Concerning School Meals
- Finance Committee bill proposing a tax on sugary drinks to fund access to no-cost breakfast and lunch
