SACRAMENTO, Calif. September, 5, 2024 — The Sacramento Heart & Stroke Walk, a signature fundraising event hosted by the American Heart Association, is bringing the community together to fight heart disease and stroke—the number one and five killers in our nation, respectively. Taking place on Saturday, Sept. 14, at William Land Park, the event raises critical funds that go towards research, advocacy, CPR training and to promote better health in support of the Association’s Health Equity Impact Goal, reducing barriers to health care access and quality.
Through the Heart & Stroke Walk, attendees honor survivors and caregivers through various activities and celebrations. Prominent local Sacramento leaders, from organizations such as Concrete Value Corp., Dignity Health, Pacific Coast Building Products, Teichert Materials and Western Health Advantage, have stepped up to support the American Heart Association, a like-minded organization working to increase physical and mental health, improve overall wellness, and change health outcomes in the community.
“This year is extra special as the Association celebrated 100 years of saving lives and now it’s more important than ever to continue this mission,” said Phil Bonnell, Sacramento Heart & Stroke Walk chair and president of PABCO Building Products, LLC. “By participating in the Heart & Stroke Walk, we are taking significant steps towards advancing medical research, improving health education and promoting healthier communities.”
While great strides have been made, there is a lot more to be done, especially as it relates to empowering the community to save lives by learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Nine out of 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of the hospital die, and CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple survival rates. Heart disease and stroke are largely preventable and how you eat, move, and manage stress impacts your well-being, physically and mentally.
“This year, we want at least one person in every household to learn CPR,” said Khuram Arif, M.D., president at Western Health Advantage. “Imagine the lifesaving impact we could make if every home in Sacramento had a hero in waiting who was confident and ready to act in a cardiac emergency. This is why Western Health Advantage is a proud local Healthy for Good sponsor; to raise awareness and turn our community of bystanders into a community of lifesavers.”
Additional highlights include an energizing warm-up, local entertainment and exciting activities for kids and families.
