LOS ANGELES, Nov. 8, 2022 – Californians overwhelmingly supported Proposition 31, upholding restrictions on the sale of flavored tobacco products passed by the California Legislature in 2020, and signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom. The law will go into effect five days after the election results are certified, making California the largest state in the nation to end the sale of flavored tobacco – including menthol cigarettes.
California will now have the nation's strongest protections against Big Tobacco’s business model that markets deadly tobacco products to kids, especially in low-income and Black and brown communities.
California voted to protect its future – to save lives. And I am proud to say the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association were standing alongside as a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives.
I want to thank the thousands of volunteers who helped make this happen, as well as our staff and YES on 31 coalition.
Thank you for putting our communities, our families and our children first. Your vote is creating a healthier, more equitable California.
We are making an impact. We are saving lives.
