MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota – April 23, 2024 – The American Heart Association, a global force for a world of healthier lives for all, will recognize local woman Robin Castillo with the prestigious Hearthero Saver award for her part in saving a young man’s life during a life-threatening cardiac event.

On March 31, 2024, while baking pies in her condo building, Castillo heard desperate cries for help. Dropping what she was doing and racing to the scene, she discovered a young man experiencing a cardiac event. Without hesitation, Castillo began performing chest compressions. She followed the life-saving technique she learned from the Association just a few weeks earlier during the Big Ten Conference basketball tournament at Target Center, where she works as a security guard. Because of her actions, she helped resuscitate the young man.

“If that was my child who needed help, I would want somebody to help me. And just hearing a mother cry for her child that way, it's very emotional. If I can help, I will help,” Castillo said. “No one else around knew how to perform CPR. There was no time to think of second guesses.”

Castillo’s actions exemplify the Association’s mission to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to respond effectively during emergencies. Her dedication to saving lives has not gone unnoticed. The American Heart Association will present her with the prestigious Hearthero Saver award in recognition of her bravery and commitment to the community.

“Robin’s swift response and unwavering commitment to CPR demonstrate the impact that everyday heroes can have,” said Krista Moffett, executive director for the American Heart Association, Twin Cities. “We are proud to honor her as a Hearthero Saver Award recipient.”

Cardiac emergencies are common, with over 350,00 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occurring annually in the United States. CPR can double or even triple someone’s chances of survival when performed immediately, yet bystander CPR is only performed 46% of the time. Together, we can turn a nation of bystanders into a nation of lifesavers. For more information on CPR, visit heart.org/CPR.
