MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Feb. 29, 2024 – In a heartwarming reunion on February 29, 2024, the American Heart Association, a global force for a world of healthier lives for all, and the Metropolitan Airports Commission recognized the heroic efforts of three bystanders who sprang into action during a life-threatening cardiac arrest incident at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP).

In July 2023, Jay May, a 57-year-old man from Zimmerman, MN, experienced sudden cardiac arrest within the airport premises. Thanks to the response of these everyday heroes, the man’s life was saved, and he has made a full recovery. The three bystanders, whose quick thinking and courage made all the difference, performed CPR and used an AED before MSP Police, the MSP Fire Department and paramedics arrived to continue his life saving care.

The American Heart Association was proud to present the Heart Hero Saver Award to the three bystanders who stepped in to help on February 29, 2024. The Heart Hero Saver Award is the Association’s way of saying thank you for performing the heroic act of CPR, a critical link in the chain of survival. The three recipients of the awards were:

  • Kirsten Kortesma of Duluth, MN
  • Mark Kortesma of Duluth, MN
  • Dr. Kyle Menzel of Hermantown, MN

“The selflessness and rapid decision-making these three demonstrated shows the critical role that CPR can play in saving lives,” said Dr. Haitham Hussein, Twin Cities AHA Board President. “We were honored to present these three individuals with the Heart Hero Saver Award to thank them for taking action during a cardiac emergency. We hope their actions continue to inspire others to learn this life-saving skill.”

Cardiac emergencies are common, with over 350,00 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occurring annually in the United States. CPR can double or even triple someone’s chances of survival when performed immediately, yet bystander CPR is only performed 46% of the time.

As we celebrate the reunion of a survivor with his rescuers, we urge everyone to learn the life-saving skill that is CPR. Together, we can turn a nation of bystanders into a nation of lifesavers. For more information on CPR, visit heart.org/CPR.
