PITTSBURGH, December 14, 2022 — As plans are underway for the 2023 Greater Pittsburgh Heart Ball, Mark Sevco, executive vice president of UPMC and president of UPMC Hospitals, Health Services Division (HSD) has been named chair of this year’s community-wide campaign. The Heart Ball celebrates progress made through the dedication and passion of all who support the American Heart Association’s Heart of Pittsburgh campaign, a year-round effort aimed at investing in and saving and improving lives in the Greater Pittsburgh community.
“Mark exemplifies true leadership and commitment as a dedicated healthcare executive here in Pittsburgh. He is the ideal person to head our Heart Ball campaign. As a trusted member of this community, he understands the impact the mission and work of the American Heart Association can have on every person who lives in this area,” said Leeanna McKibben, American Heart Association, Greater Pittsburgh board president and chief of staff and vice chancellor at the University of Pittsburgh. “We welcome Mark to the Heart of Pittsburgh, an initiative that centers around better health for every individual by focusing on critical issues and work to equitably improve and save lives.”
Sevco is responsible for the direct oversight of 40 academic, community and specialty hospitals across Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York. He has served UPMC in various capacities for 30 years working for more than eight different UPMC hospitals and for the Physician Services Division (PSD) of UPMC. Prior to his role as president of UPMC Hospitals, Mark was president of UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. UPMC Children’s Hospital is nationally ranked as a top ten hospital in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.
“I am honored to serve as Chair of the 2023 Pittsburgh Heart Ball,” said Sevco. “This mission is very personal to me. Over the last year, I lost two close friends due to cardiac arrest. In conjunction with the American Heart Association’s impact goal of advancing cardiovascular health for all, the heart of my campaign platform will be increasing education around prevention and CPR so that more people are equipped to respond to out-of-hospital cardiac arrests. I am eager to work together with our outstanding team of volunteers and the American Heart Association as we all advocate to make a difference in the well-being of people in this community.”
The 2023 Pittsburgh Heart Ball is sponsored by UPMC, UPMC Health Plan, PNC Healthcare, Dickie McCamey, Heritage Valley Health System, First National Bank and Prosp Hire among others and slated for March 10, 2023, at Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown.
The annual celebratory event is a night to honor survivors, patrons and volunteers of the American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health. The evening will feature stories from survivors, as well as dinner, dancing and an exciting auction. The American Heart Association’s Heart of Pittsburgh campaign is a year-round effort culminating at the annual Heart Ball. The initiative raises funds to aid the American Heart Association’s mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives while supporting priority issues in Pittsburgh. The American Heart Association Greater Pittsburgh board identified nutrition security, blood pressure management, maternal health, and Hands-Only CPR training among the critical topics to propel the Association’s 2024 Health Equity Impact Goal by reducing barriers to healthcare access and quality.
